What types of business broadband are available?
SoADSL: broadband over copper
SoADSL means Single Order ADSL. It provides broadband over the copper pair from the premises to the telephone exchange without bundling a traditional analogue phone service. Because the signal travels over copper for the whole route, speed is heavily affected by line length and quality. It is normally considered where newer fibre services are not available rather than as the first choice for a busy office.
SoGEA: fibre to the cabinet, copper to the premises
SoGEA stands for Single Order Generic Ethernet Access. It uses fibre from the exchange to a street cabinet and the existing copper pair for the final section into the building. It is technically similar to FTTC broadband but does not include an analogue phone line. Download speeds can reach around 80 Mbps and uploads around 20 Mbps, although the real estimate depends on the distance and condition of the copper connection.
SoGEA can be a perfectly sensible option for a small team, a secondary connection or a building that has not yet received full fibre. Its limitation is that the final copper section still restricts speed and can make one Newcastle address perform very differently from another.
FTTP: full fibre broadband
Fibre to the Premises takes optical fibre all the way into the building. There is no copper in the access path, so FTTP can offer much higher speeds and is not affected by distance in the same way as SoADSL or SoGEA. It is usually the best-value fixed broadband option where it is available, particularly for cloud applications, video meetings, off-site backups and larger teams.
FTTP is still broadband. Most services use shared network capacity and may have a much lower upload speed than download speed. The available speed tiers, repair options and router features also differ between access networks and service providers, so two packages described as “full fibre” may not be equivalent.
EoFTTP: Ethernet service delivered over FTTP
Ethernet over FTTP uses full-fibre access from the premises but connects the service to a business Ethernet platform rather than an ordinary broadband platform. It can provide a useful middle ground for smaller offices, branch sites and organisations that need stronger performance and service commitments without the cost or lead time of a traditional fibre leased line.
EoFTTP should not automatically be treated as identical to a dedicated leased line. The underlying FTTP access can still use shared passive optical network infrastructure, and the exact committed bandwidth may differ from the peak access speed. Mobile broadband: 4G and 5G
Mobile broadband can connect temporary premises, construction sites, events and locations where fixed-line installation would take too long. It is also valuable as automatic backup for a fixed connection. A suitable business router can switch traffic to 4G or 5G if the main line fails and return to the fixed service when it is restored.
Performance depends on indoor signal, mast capacity, network choice, building materials and the position of the router or external antenna. Data allowances, public IP requirements and the amount of traffic that should pass over backup also need to be considered. A strong speed test at one moment is not the same as guaranteed capacity.

Openreach operates the largest wholesale access network and its infrastructure is used by many internet service providers. Depending on the address, it can support SoADSL, SoGEA, FTTP and Ethernet-based services. The physical access network may be the same, but the provider's core network, support, IP service, router and fault management can be very different. That is why it matters who supplies and manages the finished service as well as whose cable enters the building.
CityFibre
CityFibre is an independent wholesale full-fibre network. Its business FTTP services can provide fast symmetrical options in supported areas, making upload-heavy work such as cloud backup and large file transfers more practical. Coverage and the providers available on the network must be checked for the individual Newcastle address.
Virgin
Virgin Media Business uses its own network footprint to offer another route into many premises, with business broadband packages reaching gigabit download speeds in suitable areas. The access technology and upload speed can vary, so we check the actual product available rather than relying on the word “fibre” in a package name. Virgin's separate infrastructure can also be useful when planning a secondary connection, although physical diversity should always be confirmed rather than assumed.
Commsworld
Commsworld operates a business-focused network with infrastructure in Newcastle, including the city centre. Where a building is on-net or close to its fibre, Commsworld can provide a strong alternative to the largest national access networks, including higher-capacity and dedicated services with business support commitments. As with every network, feasibility and price depend on the exact location.
We compare the options across all four rather than steering every enquiry to one preferred access network. The most suitable service is the one that fits the building, applications, risk and budget—not simply the provider with the loudest headline speed.
The router matters as much as the line
It is important to have the right broadband router for your needs. A basic provider hub may be adequate for a very small office, but growing businesses may need better processing capacity, firewall control, guest and staff network separation, quality of service for cloud telephony, static IP support, remote access, automatic mobile failover and several managed Wi-Fi access points.

Mobile backup for resilient business broadband
A 4G or 5G backup connection can keep essential work moving when the primary broadband line fails. With a suitable managed router, failover is automatic: the router checks the fixed connection continuously, moves selected traffic onto the mobile service when it detects an outage and returns to the main line after it has recovered. Staff do not need to find a mobile hotspot or reconfigure every device during the fault.
We plan the backup around the services that really need to stay online. Cloud applications, card terminals and business telephony may take priority, while large backups, software downloads and guest Wi-Fi can be restricted to protect the mobile data allowance. Where practical, we choose a mobile network that is operationally separate from the primary fixed-line provider and can fit an external antenna if the indoor signal is weak.
Mobile backup improves resilience, but it is not magic. Speed and latency can change with signal and mast demand; public IP addressing may differ; active calls, VPNs or logged-in sessions may briefly reconnect when the route changes; and the router, mobile modem and local network still need power. A complete design can therefore include a UPS, regular failover testing, monitoring and a clear plan for how the business should operate on reduced capacity.

Could the problem actually be your Wi-Fi?
A fast broadband circuit cannot compensate for an insufficient Wi-Fi setup. Thick walls, metalwork, interference, poor router placement, too many devices on one access point or an old Wi-Fi standard can all create slow speeds, drop-outs and patchy coverage even when the broadband line is healthy.
A useful first test is to connect a suitable computer to the router by Ethernet cable and compare that result with Wi-Fi in the problem area. If the wired service is stable but wireless performance is poor, the answer may be a properly designed managed Wi-Fi system rather than a more expensive broadband package. Contention: why the headline speed is not the whole story
Broadband is generally a contended service. Capacity is shared at points in the access and provider networks, so the advertised maximum is not dedicated to your business every second of the day. Actual throughput can change as other users become active, and the download speed printed on a package says nothing by itself about latency, packet loss, upload capacity or repair time.
For many small and medium-sized businesses, good-quality FTTP with the right router and support is excellent value. Where connectivity is crucial to trading, however, a leased line is the stronger choice.
