Amazon Leo in the UK: what homes and businesses need to know
Amazon Leo - previously called Project Kuiper - is Amazon's new low-Earth-orbit satellite broadband network. It is being built to deliver fast, responsive internet to homes, businesses and public-sector organisations beyond the practical reach of reliable fibre or fixed wireless services.
For UK homes and organisations, the important news is that the foundations are in place and commercial rollout is approaching. Bletchley Networks is preparing to provide a fully managed installation service, helping household and business customers move from initial survey to a working, professionally installed connection.
What is Amazon Leo?
Unlike a traditional satellite service that relies on spacecraft far above the Earth, Amazon Leo uses a large constellation in low Earth orbit, roughly 590 to 630 kilometres above the planet. The shorter distance helps reduce delay, making the connection more suitable for video calls, cloud applications and other everyday business workloads.
Amazon plans more than 3,000 satellites in its first-generation system, supported by ground gateways and a global fibre network. Customer sites connect through a compact electronically steered antenna with no dish motor to track or maintain.
How fast could it be?
Amazon has announced three antenna options, intended for different levels of demand:
- Leo Nano: a compact 7-inch terminal with downloads up to 100 Mbps.
- Leo Pro: an 11-inch terminal with downloads up to 400 Mbps.
- Leo Ultra: an enterprise terminal with downloads up to 1 Gbps and uploads up to 400 Mbps.
These are maximum figures from Amazon's preliminary testing, not guaranteed speeds. Real performance will depend on the selected plan, location, weather, network capacity, installation quality and the customer's own network and Wi-Fi.
When will Amazon Leo be available in the UK?
Amazon began a limited enterprise preview in November 2025 and says broader service will roll out during 2026 as more satellites add coverage and capacity. Its stated plan is to begin at northern and southern latitudes, then expand towards the Equator. That makes an initial UK launch during 2026 a reasonable expectation, but it should still be treated as an estimate until Amazon publishes firm order dates and service areas.
UK regulatory progress is encouraging. Ofcom granted Amazon's network earth-station licence in February 2025 and later approved a gateway earth station at Bude in Cornwall. Those decisions authorise the radio network and the UK gateway needed to support satellite broadband and backhaul services; they do not, by themselves, guarantee that every postcode can order service on day one.
Customers joining our waiting list will receive a practical update when UK ordering, coverage, hardware and installation options become clear. We will not recommend placing a firm migration date around Amazon Leo until service is orderable for the relevant address.
We will manage the installation process
Satellite broadband is often described as simple to install, but a reliable home or business deployment involves more than putting an antenna outside. Position, structure, cable routing, weatherproofing, power, network design and failover behaviour all affect the result.
Subject to final Amazon partner and hardware arrangements, our managed process will cover:
- Availability check: confirm that service and suitable hardware can be ordered for the site.
- Site survey: assess the sky view, mounting options, cable route, power and local network.
- Installation plan: agree the safe mounting location and how Leo will operate as a primary or backup connection.
- Professional installation: mount the terminal, route and seal cabling, and connect the network equipment.
- Configuration and testing: verify performance, Wi-Fi or firewall integration, and automatic failover where required.
- Handover: document the installation and explain how the service fits into the wider connectivity setup.
Where internet access is operationally important, we can also design Amazon Leo alongside fibre, leased line, 4G/5G or another satellite service. A diverse backup is most useful when it avoids the same physical route and failure points as the primary connection.

- Homes in rural and hard-to-reach areas where fixed broadband is slow or unreliable.
- Rural offices, farms, estates and hospitality sites waiting for dependable full fibre.
- Construction sites and temporary premises that need connectivity faster than a new fixed circuit can be delivered.
- Businesses needing a physically diverse backup to their terrestrial broadband or leased line.
- Remote monitoring, utilities and operational sites with demanding cloud or video workloads.
- Multi-site organisations that want a consistent satellite option across difficult locations.
What is still unknown?
UK pricing, contract terms, data policies, precise coverage and the order in which residential and business products will become available have not all been confirmed publicly.
